My cleanse is over (officially!) but I plan to continue to eat detoxifying foods on a daily basis. One of those foods is broccoli, which I rarely cook because the Mr. doesn’t like it much. Thank goodness for this recipe I found for broccoli cheese soup, he loved it! I actually made this before my cleanse but I’ll make it again because it is super delicious and easy to make.
Ingredients: 1 C almond milk// 1/2 C shredded cheddar cheese// 1.5 C fresh or frozen broccoli steamed// 1 chicken or veg bouillon cube.
//Blend all ingredients together in a blender or processor and serve! Oh, and we aren’t afraid of cheese because it provides good fat and protein, just don’t eat too much;)
I’m so excited to keep trying new healthy recipes this year, my motivation is high! The 3 day cleanse was definitely a great idea and I highly recommend researching and finding a cleanse that you can do safely and healthily. There are so many illnesses and diseases that can be prevented with a healthy, whole food, diet and the cleanse helps you get started. Of course, you can eat cleansing and detoxifying foods daily without doing a cleanse. Most of these are vegetables, so I’ll be experimenting with lots of veggies in recipes I’ve never tried. I’ll keep you updated with my favorites!
This colorful smoothie has 4 whole carrots, peeled// 1 apple, de-stemmed// 1/2 C water// strawberry garnish *add a slice of ginger for extra health benefits. Today is Day 3 of my cleanse and I’m having my second smoothie of the day. I feel fine, good even. I stopped feeling hungry yesterday as the smoothies are very filling. My headache stopped also which I think was largely due to my lack of caffeine. One cup of green tea with my breakfast smoothie and I’m good to go. I’ve been sleeping very well. I’ve been reading my Clean eating (awesome vegetarian, dairy free, gluten free recipes) cookbook for ideas of what to cook after my cleanse so I stay on track. I’m also going to start planning a garden so I’m going to read up on good veggies to plant here. I’ve been wanting to do this forever!
So what after the cleansing period? While I’m not going to be a vegetarian or go on any “diet”, my goal is to continue to eat lots of veggies, whole grains and no refined or processed grains as much as possible, no refined sugars, less liqueur and more wine (happy face), nuts, and plenty of proteins. I’m also committed to a regular exercise regimen of which currently I workout with my husband every other day and then walk the dogs on off days. I’m really excited to start this year off so healthily, it feels really good!!!
How are you guys doing on your new years resolutions?
P.S. If you want to do a cleanse, I highly recommend watching Joe Cross’s documentary “Fat, sick and nearly dead” first for some great information and motivational stories. A couple great detox smoothie recipes I found were from Dr. Oz; I really liked the ingredients he used in them like coconut water, almond butter, cucumbers, kale (click for some great nutrition facts/cooking methods) and pineapples. I plan on doing this cleanse several times a year as part of my regular diet. It makes so much sense to clean out your insides every once in a while.
So today I’m starting a cleansing detox for 3 days. What it means is no food, just fresh produce smoothies. I’ve lately felt sluggish and tired and I think this might be just what I need. I watched several documentaries like “Fat, sick and Nearly dead” about juicing and cleansing and how it really should just be part of your life, not something you do once and done. We eat a healthy, clean diet as much as possible but I think I just need something extra to get me motivated again. I remember feeling this way a year ago as well, in fact much worse. I was severely stressed out with planning an out-of-state wedding by myself, suffering a very difficult loss in the family, and with my job. I wasn’t dealing very well and couldn’t get motivated for several months. I want this year to start out well now!
We bought ourselves a Vitamix blender for Christmas. It’s different than a juicer but I’m convinced that eating the whole fruit/vegetable is way more beneficial than just squeezing the juice out. I would love to try a juicer sometime, but for now I think this is the way to go. I’ve already been having a smoothie a day for breakfast for about a week now and they are really great. The vitamix is so powerful that it can even blend up strawberry seeds and get out all those nutrients that normally your body just rids because it’s too small or hard to digest.
Today’s smoothie: Green goodness
ingredients: 3 C spinach// 1 celery rib// 1 medium carrot, peeled// 5 strawberries// 1 orange, peeled// 1 apple, whole// small bunch cilantro
The cilantro really overpowers this smoothie, but in a good, clean, fresh liver-cleansing way. It’s altogether sweet and delicious. Are you doing anything new this year to get motivated/healthier? Bottoms up, Jessica.
